BSE TEAM

(BENDIGO SOUTH EAST = BEST SCHOOL EVER)
‘HITTING THE SWEET SPOT’

School background:
Years 7 to 10, government school. Regional centre. 1200 students. Being completely rebuilt. 2010 years 7 + 8 in neighbourhood ‘pods’ of 300+ students each year level (open plan), 9 + 10 pods to be built during 2010.

PD at BSE (eCafe, ePotential):
2008: all teachers undertook ePotential survey. Results analysed by Principal Team and ICT manager.
2009: started staff eCafe 2 times per term; sharing ICT learning. Some staff re-took ePotential survey.

Our project is called ‘Hitting the sweet spot’ – aiming at helping each other develop the T element of the TPACK needed to improve student learning. We want to ‘Transform the learning, not just digitise the curriculum’!

The journey we’ve been on (Stages):
As a team:
· Introduction day in Melbourne
· 5 x Elluminate sessions
· 12 x f2f (face-to-face) sessions (usually Friday morning before school)

Individually:
· Discovering, playing with, using, evaluating, sharing Web 2.0 tools
· Various tasks set through the PLP ning (eg joining groups, contributing to discussions, starting discussions)
· Documenting our project on the PLP ning
· Attending, running, sharing PD sessions related to Web 2.0 tools

2010 students:
Year 7 in 2010 are coming with 1to1 netbooks, introduced in 14 associate primary schools this year. BSE in 2010 will also have 150+ laptops available for years 8,9,10 students to borrow.

PROJECT TITLE: Hitting the sweet spot

FOCUS: Professional development - to share what the team is learning with the rest of the faculty (teaching and student support staff).
1. PROBLEM OR QUESTION:
How do we make the best use of 1to1 netbooks in order to maximise student learning (starting with year 7 in 2010)?
- what tools are available/effective/relevant?
- how do we help our staff become skilled in using those tools?

2. OBJECTIVES + ASSESSMENT:
- Our team will become aware of and confident in using relevant Web 2.0 tools in our classrooms. How we will know? We'll have the ability and confidence to share our learning with each other.
- We will share our learning with colleagues. How will we know? Web 2.0 tools will be used in classrooms and become part of pedagogy of teachers at BSE.

3. NETWORKED DESIGN: (how will we go about it?)
1. f2f at regular eCafes = very individualised and personal
2. Presentation of one tool at each staff meeting = large group demonstration
3. via a Web 2.0 tool (still trying to choose between various options) = individualised and private if desired

4. SET THE CONTEXT:
In 2010 BSE will welcome approximately 300 new Year 7 students who will arrive with their netbooks. We face the challenge over the next few months of getting prepared for this opportunity by adjusting our curriculum and becoming familiar with useful Web 2.0 tools. Currently our classes have fairly limited exposure to computers because of issues related to availability and internet access.

We need to develop our Technological Knowledge in order to 'HIT THE SWEET SPOT' (transform the curriculum, not just digitise it) and so maximise student learning. We are confident with our own content knowledge for our subjects taught. We are experience with planning different pedagogical techniques. We plan to use the TPACK Model.

5. PROPOSAL:
There are a number of strategies our team has come up with to address the problems we have identified.
1) All the members of the team are to become aware of and skilled in using a range of Web 2.0 tools.
2) Members of the BSE team will pass on relevant skills to colleagues within their respective Learning Neighbourhoods through formal planning of curriculum and informal interaction.
3). We will attempt to make the staff throughout the school aware of Web 2.0 tools through the eCafe, regular spots in whole staff meetings and using the BSE Professional Ning.
4) We will begin immediately trialling web 2.0 tools in our classrooms.
We feel that these approaches will be successful because of the challenge faced by the whole school: utilising the 1to1 netbooks when new Year 7 students arrive in 2010.

6. EVALUATION:
We are aiming to have a large proportion staff, particularly in the Year 7 and 8 neighbourhoods, to participate in the ePotential survey at the start of the 2010 school year. After staff have completed the survey we can use our e-Café sessions to inform and skill teachers in areas based on needs and interests. Later in the year, staff can complete the same ePotential survey, which will give us data, in order to compare the results and growth of staff. This will indicate the success of our PD project.

As staff members, we want to share our knowledge and skills in neighbourhood communities. The use of Web 2.0 tools can be evaluated and improved upon in this smaller setting between staff. The TPACK model will be presented at the whole staff meeting as a tool for staff. We also plan for domains or neighbourhoods to use the TPACK model to evaluate our teaching and curriculum.

7.TIMELINE:
• Research into Web 2.0 tools- PLP team to research and compile a list of suitable Web 2.0 tools for use within the
classroom. List to be compiled by culminating event Nov 16.
• Staff have completed the 1st stage of the ePotential survey. This will provide us with an understanding of where our
staff are at and what PD is most beneficial for our cohort.
• Construction of BSE Professional Ning as a social networking tool for staff.
• Work with teaching teams to develop curriculum with suitable content. Unit planners to have ICT from our list
infused through them and suitable assessment of ICT. Units to be finalised 2009 and begin teaching in 2010.
